This assault disrupted the natural gas supply to the adjacent power station, triggering a significant blackout across the region. The incident resulted in the loss of 2,600 megawatts of electricity, effectively crippling 80% of the local power grid and sparking a fire at a major gas storage facility. Remarkably, no lives were lost in the attack.
The purpose of this assault appears to be an attempt to undermine the security and economic stability of Iraq. The Khormor Gas Field, a vital energy source within the autonomous region, plays a crucial role in meeting the majority of the area's electricity needs.
