Canonical recently released Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed "Stonking Stingray." As a transitional version following Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release will be supported for 9 months until July 2027. Ubuntu 26.10 has completed the full migration to Rust-based core tools, with all default command-line tools now implemented using Rust's uutils. The previously retained GNU commands cp, mv, and rm have also been switched, marking the official completion of the Rust core tool transition. This version comes with the GNOME 51 desktop environment, featuring numerous improvements in animation smoothness and interactive responsiveness, while removing support for the insecure WEP wireless encryption standard. The kernel is built on Linux 7.3-rc6, with the graphics stack updated to Mesa 26.2. It introduces initial support for Qualcomm-related laptops and provides RISC-V desktop images for the first time. The App Center now uniformly displays information for both Snap and DEB packages, adds a standalone driver management page, and enables the system to install missing multimedia codecs on demand. Additionally, an experimental locally-run speech-to-text tool, Myna preview, has been introduced. In terms of security, Ubuntu 26.10 adopts OpenSSL 4, introduces multiple updates including ECH support, expands post-quantum cryptography capabilities, optimizes TPM-supported full-disk encryption rules, and adds authentication support for Microsoft Entra ID. Currently, desktop and server installation images are available for download. Officials recommend users seeking stability and long-term maintenance opt for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
