On October 9, SpaceX announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire a nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz low-band spectrum licenses, paving the way for its Starlink mobile service to enter the U.S. telecommunications market. This band includes up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum, which offers strong penetration capabilities to enhance coverage indoors, outdoors, and in areas where traditional cellular networks have blind spots. SpaceX stated that the newly acquired low-band spectrum will address a critical technical gap in signal penetration, enabling the company to build a hybrid 'satellite + ground' network. Musk said that this spectrum represents the final key piece needed for SpaceX to provide complete mobile coverage across the United States. Affected by concerns over increased competition and a potential price war, shares of the three major U.S. wireless carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon—each fell more than 5% in after-hours trading. The transaction still requires approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
