On October 9th, SpaceX announced on Thursday that it has reached an agreement to acquire a portfolio of nationwide low-band spectrum licenses, a move that will enable it to directly compete with traditional US wireless giants. Although Starlink Mobile's existing global 2GHz mid-band spectrum already offers high bandwidth capacity, the newly acquired spectrum will enhance its ability to penetrate obstacles. This action further advances Musk's vision of bypassing traditional wireless infrastructure to provide cellular network services directly to smartphones from Earth orbit. The transaction involves acquiring the full equity stake in a nationwide 800MHz spectrum portfolio held by private equity firm Grain Management, though the deal still requires approval from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Additionally, the FCC this week also approved Starlink Mobile's application for a second-generation satellite constellation, allowing SpaceX to launch 15,000 satellites worldwide optimized for the 2GHz band. Following the announcement, shares of US telecom companies slipped in after-hours trading, while SpaceX's stock rose by over 1.7%.
