Nokia has forged a partnership with Finnish satellite startup Iceye, with plans to deploy up to 50 low-Earth orbit satellites each year beginning in 2028. Together, they aim to construct a bespoke satellite communication system for Europe. This system seamlessly integrates satellites with ground terminals, harmonizing with existing terrestrial networks. It is underpinned by European technology, with all equipment independently owned and operated by the user nations. Specifically designed to augment both military and commercial networks, the system offers high-capacity, low-latency communication services crucial for sectors like defense and emergency response. This initiative aims to diminish dependence on overseas service providers. Presently, numerous European countries are vigorously enhancing their autonomous satellite communication capabilities. The EU has expanded its IRIS² sovereign satellite program, and Poland is also making strides in related ventures. Iceye is boosting its satellite production capabilities and sustaining a strong operational posture. Nokia, as a strategic investor in Iceye, has contributed to its financing and is venturing into areas such as satellite equipment. Faced with competition from Starlink, certain European and U.S. telecom operators are contemplating the formation of an alliance to bid for satellite spectrum and roll out satellite-to-phone services.
