On August 18, reports indicated that in recent years, China has witnessed a significant acceleration in the industrialization of sodium-ion batteries, with the sector demonstrating robust growth momentum. As safety standards for batteries continue to be refined, the needle penetration test—a crucial experiment for assessing the risk of internal short circuits within battery cells—has emerged as a key metric for evaluating the safety of power batteries. At present, with the swift industrialization of sodium-ion battery technology, products are evolving towards higher energy densities and greater integration. In response, the Standardization Working Group for Lithium-ion Batteries and Similar Products, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has launched a dedicated needle penetration evaluation for sodium-ion batteries. This evaluation aims to systematically verify the safety of products with varying energy densities, enabling enterprises to pinpoint potential hazards, refine their designs, and facilitate the uniform implementation of industry standards.
