Harvard University's investment management division has revealed that it possesses SpaceX shares valued at $2.2 billion. The university made an early investment in Elon Musk's pioneering rocket company and has since enjoyed significant returns, especially following SpaceX's public market debut. Harvard Management Company made this disclosure in a regulatory filing on Friday, highlighting that SpaceX has emerged as the single largest holding, by market value, within its $4.3 billion U.S. equity investment portfolio. This substantial holding underscores how SpaceX's record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) in June has yielded substantial profits for numerous university endowment funds. Many of these funds initially acquired stakes in SpaceX over a decade ago through venture capital channels. According to the most recent publicly available data, as of June 2025, Harvard Management Company oversees approximately $57 billion in assets. Moreover, Harvard is not the sole beneficiary of SpaceX's entry into the public market. This week's filings by the investment arm of the University of California disclosed that it holds around $1 billion worth of SpaceX shares. Additionally, both the University of North Carolina and Washington University in St. Louis have also made investments in the company.
