The U.S. nuclear energy sector has achieved a key milestone: For the first time in over 40 years, a next-generation reactor developed by a private enterprise using non-light-water reactor technology has achieved critical operation in the United States and completed the 'ignition' milestone at Idaho National Laboratory. The test microreactor, named Antares Nuclear Mark-0, signifies a new stride in Western nuclear energy development and is one of the advanced reactors under the U.S. Department of Energy's 'Reactor Pilot Program' to be the first to reach the criticality goal.
