A federal judge in the United States rejected on Monday (local time) President Trump's decision to impose a $100,000 fee on newly issued H-1B visas (visas for highly skilled foreign workers), ruling that the fee constitutes an illegal tax not authorized by Congress. The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston, addressed a lawsuit filed by 20 Democratic state attorneys general. These attorneys general challenged the fee announced by Trump in September last year, which significantly increased the cost of obtaining H-1B visas—a type of visa that U.S. tech companies particularly rely on to bring in foreign workers.
