According to reports from multiple media sources, including Electrek, battery researcher Ziroth, working in tandem with over 20 independent battery experts, has uncovered through meticulous investigation that the so-called all-solid-state battery showcased by Finnish company Donut Lab at CES 2026 is, in fact, nothing more than an ordinary lithium-ion battery. Donut Lab had made grandiose claims about their battery, asserting that it boasted an energy density of 400Wh/kg, a cycle life exceeding 100,000 cycles, and the ability to be fully charged in a mere 5 minutes. Riding on these lofty promises, the company managed to secure approximately $25 million in funding from over 1,300 individual investors, reaching a staggering valuation of $1.25 billion at its peak.
However, the Finnish technical research center VTT conducted five rounds of independent testing, all of which failed to replicate the core performance metrics touted by Donut Lab. Delving deeper into the matter, it was revealed that the purported battery technology actually originated from German company CT Coatings, whose patent portfolio had no connection to battery technology whatsoever. What Donut Lab had delivered were, in reality, ordinary lithium-ion pouch batteries.
It appears that Donut Lab completed its technical due diligence without seeking external verification, raising suspicions of falsely advertising the delivery status of mass-produced vehicles. At present, Finnish financial regulators and criminal investigation authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.
