The U.S. Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract on Tuesday to build the backbone of the Space Data Network (SDN). Utilizing a resilient, proliferated low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, the network aims to enable high-capacity, low-latency data transmission and support near-real-time delivery of missile warning tracking data to interceptors, forming a critical component of the "Golden Dome" missile defense program. The project requires delivery of an operational prototype system by the end of 2027. The network will operate in tandem with the Space Development Agency's transport layer to provide vital data transmission support for Department of Defense missions. The Space Force plans to finalize additional contractors this summer for satellite construction and other network components.
