On April 29, the European Commission ruled that Meta has violated the EU Digital Services Act due to its failure to effectively prevent children under the age of 13 from registering and using its social media products. Preliminary investigations indicate that although Meta stipulates a minimum user age of 13, its enforcement measures are inadequate. The existing mechanisms have neither effectively prevented underage users from registering and using the services nor promptly identified and removed accounts of minors who have already gained access. Meta can review the preliminary findings and submit written defenses. If the ruling is upheld, it could face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual total revenue.
