On Wednesday, EU regulatory authorities announced that Facebook and Instagram, platforms under the umbrella of U.S. tech behemoth Meta, are facing allegations of contravening the EU's Digital Services Act. These platforms are urged to implement more robust measures to bar children under the age of 13 from gaining access. The allegations arise from a two-year probe conducted by the European Commission, during which regulators highlighted Meta's shortcomings in effectively restricting and identifying the presence of underage users (those under 13), and subsequently removing them. They pointed out that a notable 10% to 12% of European children under 13 continue to utilize these two platforms. The European Commission has mandated that both platforms refine their risk assessment techniques and bolster their preventive strategies. Prior to any final decision, Meta has the opportunity to address these allegations and undertake corrective actions. Non-compliance with the act could result in fines amounting to up to 6% of the company's global annual revenue.
