Meta has inked a contract with space energy startup Overview Energy, aiming to acquire up to 1 gigawatt of solar power, with a portion of this energy to be sourced from space. Overview Energy has outlined plans to carry out in-orbit technology verification in space by 2028 and to officially roll out commercial services by 2030. The idea of harnessing solar power from orbit has been floating around for decades. However, its realization was long hindered by technological and cost barriers. Now, innovative startups like Overview Energy are spearheading the drive towards its commercialization. Overview Energy intends to position satellites in geosynchronous orbit. Its space-based power transmission approach offers a way to overcome the limitations of ground-based photovoltaic power stations by delivering real-time energy replenishment to the Earth's surface. At present, the company is simultaneously engaged in the development of satellite equipment and the establishment of a mass production line. Neither party has disclosed the specific terms of the agreement.
