Apple, working alongside supply chain partners including Luxshare Precision, BYD, and BOE, as well as global giants like General Motors and eBay, has collectively endorsed a statement that challenges the mandatory stipulation in the proposed amendments to the Scope 2 guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP). This stipulation requires companies to align their electricity usage with clean energy sources on an hourly basis. The signatory companies contend that enforcing this requirement will escalate electricity costs and diminish the motivation for businesses to engage in voluntary clean energy markets, thereby potentially impeding the worldwide transition to a low-carbon economy. They advocate for hourly matching to be a voluntary option rather than a compulsory one, aiming to foster investments in power sector decarbonization in a more practical and effective manner.
