On April 14, the IETF released the core protocol draft for IPv8. This protocol adopts a 64-bit address space, achieving 100% backward compatibility with IPv4, and is expected to address the industry pain point of slow IPv6 migration. While IPv6 has resolved the issue of address depletion, it has not addressed management fragmentation, and the cost of dual-stack deployment remains high. IPv8 is not intended to replace IPv6 but rather to provide a more compatible upgrade solution. Currently, the draft is merely a technical proposal and has not yet become an official IETF standard or gained consensus within the industry. It will be open for discussion by the global industry over the next six months, and its practical implementation still requires further verification and refinement.
