The rising costs of RAM and other computing components are pushing up the price of Meta’s Quest VR headsets, which the company says will increase by $50–$100 (about 12–20 percent) starting on April 19. In announcing that price increase on Thursday, the company cited the “global surge in the price of critical components—specifically memory chips—[that] is impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR.”

But unlike many of the other tech companies that have been pushed into similar price increases in recent months, Meta’s own spending priorities are at least partly to blame for the rising prices of those components. The company’s recent hard pivot to the “AI superintelligence” race has directly contributed to the conditions that are now making its own Quest headsets more expensive.

Spending like a drunk sailor

In January, Meta announced that it plans to spend $115 billion to $135 billion on capital expenditures this year, up significantly from $72 billion in 2025 and just $28 billion as recently as 2023. The vast majority of that investment is going into AI infrastructure, including a recent $21 billion in new investment in data center company CoreWeave (in addition to $14.2 billion originally committed) and an additional $10 billion recently committed to a planned El Paso data center (up from $1.5 billion initially).

Meta’s AI spending makes up a decent chunk of the $630 billion in total AI infrastructure investment pledged industry-wide for 2026, according to CNBC. And a large part of that spending is going directly into RAM- and storage-hungry GPUs and data centers, in turn leading to the very component supply crunch that is forcing Meta to raise prices on Quest headsets.

Meta’s partially self-inflicted Quest pricing situation is particularly striking given how recently the company changed its name and threw vast sums of money at its vision for a VR-based metaverse—one it said would form the basis of “the next version of the Internet.” That hasn’t panned out how CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisioned five years ago, though, as $73 billion in cumulative losses for Meta’s VR-focused Reality Labs division can attest.

But while Meta was more or less alone among big tech companies in making significant investments in the metaverse, it’s just one of many companies throwing boatloads of money at the AI revolution. And Meta’s yearslong spending spree on the metaverse pales in comparison to what the company is throwing at AI this year alone.

Still, with Meta reportedly planning spending cuts of up to 30 percent for its metaverse division, it’s clear where the company’s focus lies for the immediate future. So when you look at the rising prices for the VR headsets that now seem to be a waning part of Meta’s focus, just remember that Meta’s own ever-shifting priorities have helped lead us to this point.

The new prices for Meta’s Quest headsets in the US are as follows:

  • Quest 3S (128GB): $350 (previously $300, up 16.7 percent)
  • Quest 3S (256GB): $450 (previously $400, up 12.5 percent)
  • Quest 3 (512GB): $600 (previously $500, up 20 percent)
