This announcement came concurrently with the unveiling of the stable release of Linux 6.19. In his communication regarding the release, Torvalds explained that the decision to leap to version 7.0 was motivated by the challenges associated with incrementing large numerical values. Consequently, following the release of version 6.19, the Linux kernel will transition to a more streamlined, 'whole number' versioning system.
