Prior to the tragic crash of an Indian Airlines Boeing 787 in June, India's aviation sector had witnessed a decade-long expansion, which inadvertently placed pilots under relentless pressure. According to pilots, industry unions, and court documents, airlines frequently pushed pilots to operate close to the legal maximum flying hours in an attempt to meet the soaring demand for air travel, resulting in frequent instances of inadequate rest periods. In the aftermath of the crash, Indian Airlines acknowledged irregularities concerning pilot staffing, rest schedules, and training, and had been previously warned by law enforcement authorities. Despite preliminary investigations indicating that the accident might have been linked to the manual deactivation of the engine fuel switch, unions persisted in highlighting the pressing issue of pilot fatigue.
