NVIDIA has launched a groundbreaking distributed computing pilot program, dubbed XFRA, which entails the installation of wall-mounted computing modules on the external walls of around 100 homes within select newly constructed smart communities. These sophisticated modules incorporate advanced hardware, including 16 graphics cards featuring the Blackwell architecture, with a total value exceeding $250,000. Remarkably, homeowners are spared from any initial financial outlay, as NVIDIA and its collaborators will shoulder the expenses for electricity and network connectivity. The computing revenue generated will be shared between the homeowners and NVIDIA/its partners, with the exact profit-sharing ratio remaining confidential. The equipment is outfitted with a specialized liquid cooling system and is designed to operate predominantly during off-peak nighttime hours or by harnessing excess photovoltaic energy. Should the pilot prove successful, these computing modules could potentially become as ubiquitous as solar panels. However, widespread adoption is currently hindered by challenges such as the capacity of household electrical circuits and the potential impact on the power grid.
