The Dutch Data Protection Authority has imposed a fine of €825 million on Uber for failing to adequately fulfill its notification and manual review obligations between 2018 and 2022. Instead, it only deactivated drivers' accounts through automated systems, violating the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This fine sets a record for data regulatory penalties in the Netherlands and is the second-highest fine since the implementation of the GDPR. The incident was reported by over 170 French drivers, and since Uber's European headquarters is in Amsterdam, the Dutch Data Protection Authority launched an investigation. Uber called the fine 'disproportionate' and stated that it would appeal, adding that the policy in question had been discontinued and that account deactivations were not entirely automated. Additionally, the Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber multiple times in recent years, imposing a €10 million fine in 2023 and a €290 million fine in 2024 for transferring European drivers' personal data to the United States.
