Morgan Stanley's latest analysis predicts that due to the expansion of economies of scale, SpaceX's AI satellite constellation program is expected to have orbital computing costs lower than those of some terrestrial data centers by 2031. Specifically, SpaceX's in-orbit computing costs are projected to drop to $6.5 per watt per year, while the costs for terrestrial data centers based on NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs will be $6.8 per watt per year. This prediction is based on the significant reduction in SpaceX's Starship launch costs and the iteration of satellite technology, which gradually highlights the economic viability of space-based data centers.
