On June 25, 2026, the European Union's antitrust regulatory body declared that, in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure ought to be classified as ‘gatekeepers.’ Despite not meeting the specific quantitative criteria, these entities will be subject to regulation owing to their dominant foothold in the EU cloud computing sector, expansive user bases, the existence of lock-in phenomena, and the substantial costs associated with switching providers. Should this classification come into effect, the two corporations will be granted a six-month period to align their cloud services with the obligations stipulated by the DMA.
