Since the start of this year, governmental bodies across various levels in the U.S.—spanning city, township, county, and state administrations—have been progressively enacting policies to halt new data center projects within their respective domains. Upon scrutinizing legal documents and local news coverage, the information platform The Information has aggregated data revealing that since 2023, state and local governments in the U.S. have imposed over 300 temporary or permanent bans on data center construction. Furthermore, more than 75 pertinent policies are presently under deliberation. The lion's share of these bans has been instituted this year, with over 275 coming into force since January 1st, and an additional 150+ new bans introduced since May alone.
