Upon receiving the green light from the Hong Kong Communications Authority, China Mobile Hong Kong formally concluded the decommissioning process of its 2G network on June 23. This strategic decision is in line with the global trajectory of telecommunications technology evolution, designed to optimize the utilization efficiency of spectrum resources and pave the way for delivering cutting-edge mobile communication services to users.
Commencing June 23, the 2G network has been entirely phased out, accompanied by the cessation of voice calling and data transmission services that rely on 2G technology. Following this shutdown, mobile phones exclusively compatible with 2G, outdated SIM cards, and 4G/5G phones lacking VoLTE functionality will no longer be capable of making voice calls.
As of November 2025, 2G subscribers constituted a mere 2.3% of China Mobile Hong Kong's total customer base. Prior to this, Hutchison Telecommunications, SmarTone, and Hong Kong Telecom had already sequentially discontinued their 2G services. As the last 2G service provider standing in Hong Kong, China Mobile Hong Kong's network decommissioning signifies the definitive conclusion of the 2G epoch in the region.
