On January 27th, CNBC reported that local authorities have given the green light to Microsoft's proposal to build an additional 15 data centers in Pleasant Hill, Wisconsin. The new site will be situated close to the expansion zone of Microsoft's existing data center facility.
This expansion in data center capacity is poised to solidify Microsoft's ability to fulfill and confirm the revenue commitments from clients like OpenAI. At present, Microsoft faces stiff competition from Amazon, Google, and Oracle in the race to construct data centers outfitted with NVIDIA chips, which are essential for training and deploying generative AI models.
However, the process of selecting suitable locations for these data centers is fraught with challenges. Utility providers frequently struggle to meet the substantial energy demands required by such facilities. Additionally, there is a rising tide of opposition from residents living in proximity to potential sites. In contrast to this general trend, homeowners and local officials in Pleasant Hill have largely embraced Microsoft's expansion initiative. With the approval now in hand, Microsoft is clear to proceed with submitting its final civil engineering blueprints and applying for the necessary building permits.
