Zimbabwe's Information Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, has revealed that the nation intends to prohibit the export of lithium concentrate from January 2027 onwards. This move aims to incentivize foreign mining companies to establish refining operations within the country, thereby bolstering Zimbabwe's economic standing. Previously, Zimbabwe had been fulfilling approximately 14% of China's lithium import requirements. Moving forward, the lithium sulfate produced locally will continue to be exported to China for further processing. Furthermore, in response to the government's proposal to implement a 5% export tax on lithium concentrate, lithium exporters have requested a postponement until 2027. This delay would allow sufficient time for the construction of factories dedicated to refining high-value lithium products.
