AMD has announced a definitive agreement to sell the data center infrastructure manufacturing business of ZT Systems to Sanmina for a combination of $3 billion in cash and stock, with the potential for additional earnout payments totaling up to $450 million. This announcement follows AMD's previous plan to divest this business segment, which was first revealed in April. Earlier this year, in March, AMD acquired ZT Systems for $4.9 billion. The purpose of divesting the manufacturing division is to mitigate competition with customers such as Dell and HP within the manufacturing sector.
Through this transaction, AMD will concentrate on its core competencies in chip design and software development. Meanwhile, Sanmina will step into the role as AMD's partner in constructing AI computing systems, leveraging its expertise in manufacturing.
