Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has officially confirmed the PlayStation 6 for the first time during the latest earnings call of the company, but it did not bring good news for all.

This is because the CEO talked about the expectations for the console and what to expect from it amidst the current global supply chain problems that the tech industry is facing, with Valve's Steam Machine presently experiencing challenges because of it.

Sony CEO Unveils Plans for PlayStation 6

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki answered a handful of questions about the company's future, one of which involved the PS6 and its eventual release and price point.

According to GameRant, Totoki said plainly that Sony still has not decided on specifics for the PS6 when it comes to its launch or price as it is still trying to adjust its business to the ongoing increases in manufacturing costs.

Totoki explained that, as the price of memory increases, the cost of manufacturing would increase as a result, which could potentially have a big impact on consoles. He also stated that for the rest of the calendar year 2026, Sony has acquired the necessary volume of materials it needs and has agreed on the price to a certain extent.

"We have not yet decided on when we will launch the new console, or at what prices. So, we would like to really observe and follow the situation," said Totoki.

"Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high in fiscal year 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So, under that assumption, we must think carefully about what we will do," he added.

What to Expect from the PS6?

One detail that stood out from Totoki's comments was the mention of changing how the PS6 is sold.

"We would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models, to come up with the best solution and strategy," Totoki said. However, he did not reveal anything further about what those new business models might look like.

Reports from external outlets speaking to sources claim Sony has been targeting a PS6 launch in 2027 with a handheld device to go with it.

That said, the plans could shift based on the latest comments shared by Totoki in the earnings call, especially if the RAM problem continues to be present through 2027.

Still, there are no official release dates or pricing officially confirmed by Sony for the PS6.
