A bipartisan group of legislators in the United States House of Representatives has introduced the 'Chip Security Act', a measure that necessitates the installation of location tracking mechanisms in high-end GPUs and AI chips within six months. The aim is to curb the unauthorized transfer of these advanced technologies to certain countries. Should these chips be diverted or misused, exporters will be required to promptly report to the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). Additionally, the Secretary of Commerce is mandated to ensure that the specified chips possess location verification capabilities within six months of the bill's enactment. While the exact details of the tracking mechanism remain unspecified, the proposed legislation has garnered significant attention. AMD and NVIDIA have declined to offer comments on the matter, and Intel has yet to respond.
