U.S. semiconductor foundry GlobalFoundries has announced plans to establish two additional semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New York State, aiming to enhance U.S. domestic chip production capacity and meet growing demand across sectors such as automotive, industrial control, aerospace, defense, and artificial intelligence. The new fabs will be located near the existing chip manufacturing campus in Malta, New York, with the first facility expected to commence production in 2029. Once fully operational, it will add approximately 900,000 units of 300mm wafer manufacturing capacity annually, with the second fab offering similar output. The project is projected to create around 27,000 construction and industry ecosystem-related jobs, along with over 1,000 new high-skilled manufacturing positions in the New York State capital region.
