On the 2nd, Micron Taiwan declared that, propelled by the robust and continuous surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI), the company is expediting its efforts to expand memory chip production capacity. By June, Micron's cumulative investment in Taiwan, China had soared to NT$1.6 trillion (equivalent to roughly US$50.2 billion). During a press conference held in Taipei, Lu Donghui, Chairman of Micron Taiwan, emphasized that there has been a marked escalation in investment over the past four years, with recent outlays eclipsing the aggregate investment made in the preceding 25 years. He underscored that the advent of ChatGPT, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, has collectively fueled a spike in demand for memory chips. Despite the industry grappling with a significant downturn in 2023, he characterized it as merely a transient hiatus.
