Recently, an unreleased AMD Ryzen 9 5900X3D engineering sample has surfaced. This processor features the Zen 3 architecture with 12 cores and 24 threads, and its biggest highlight is the 128MB L3 cache (64MB native + 64MB 3D V-Cache). In comparison, the already released Ryzen 7 5800X3D has 8 cores and 16 threads with a 96MB L3 cache. This indicates that AMD explored higher-spec X3D processors during the Zen 3 era but ultimately did not release them to the consumer market. Engineering samples differ from retail products, as their frequencies, voltages, power consumption, and cache operation methods may vary from the final product, so their performance cannot be simply inferred. AMD's decision to release the 8-core 5800X3D first was likely to reduce product complexity and validate the effectiveness of 3D V-Cache on desktop processors.
