On October 2, Nikkei News reported that Japan's Toshiba plans to double its production capacity of hard disk drives (HDDs) for artificial intelligence data centers by the fiscal year 2027. To achieve this, Toshiba will invest around 60 billion yen to expand its production facilities in the Philippines. The goal is to establish a more robust supply system and provide essential storage components for AI infrastructure. This expansion represents Toshiba's first significant investment in its HDD business in nearly five years. In addition to adding production lines, Toshiba will introduce new products, with storage capacities of individual hard drives increasing by up to 40%. Given the sustained and growing demand for HDD storage from AI data centers, Toshiba will continue to allocate capital. The company aims to achieve mass production of 65TB-class hard drives by 2030 and eventually progress toward mass production of 100TB-class hard drives. Although solid-state drives (SSDs) offer faster read and write speeds, their cost is roughly 20 times that of HDDs. The current tight supply of storage chips has further fueled market demand for HDDs.
