Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced its intention to deploy its self-developed AI chips into space. This will be achieved through a launch aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, scheduled to take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 11:15 AM Pacific Time on October 1, 2026. This endeavor forms a crucial part of the 'Sun Catcher Project,' which is designed to assess the performance of AI chips in the challenging space environment and lay the groundwork for the establishment of space-based data centers. The test satellite will be equipped with four TPU chips and will orbit in low-Earth orbit for about a year. During this period, it will rigorously evaluate the stability and effectiveness of these chips under the harsh conditions of vacuum, radiation, and extreme temperatures.
