Recently, the research team led by Associate Professor Zhan Chenchang at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong College of Microelectronics, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has achieved notable advancements in the realm of radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting chips. They have introduced an adaptive sampling frequency fractional open-circuit voltage maximum power point tracking (ASF-FOCV MPPT) method, grounded in energy packet counting. This method effectively tackles the blind spot challenges that arise from the multipath effect of electromagnetic waves in conventional RF energy harvesting systems. It does so by dynamically adjusting the sampling frequency, which in turn enhances system reliability and energy conversion efficiency. Studies reveal that this method allows the system to attain a peak conversion efficiency of 44%, accompanied by a notable surge in output power within a high conversion efficiency power input range of 15 dB (input power range corresponding to a conversion efficiency > 35%). Furthermore, this method incorporates a cold start function, which not only cuts down on system cost and complexity but also facilitates the expansion of the number of antennas. The pertinent research results have been published in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC), a leading journal in the field of integrated circuit design. Additionally, an invention patent has been filed (Application No.: 202311102317.1), jointly owned by the Southern University of Science and Technology and the University of Macau.
