On September 3, industry data revealed that Samsung Electronics significantly closed the gap with SK Hynix, the current global frontrunner in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip market, during the second quarter. According to data released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, from April to June, SK Hynix maintained its top position with a 50% share of the revenue market. However, this marked an 8-percentage-point decrease from its 58% share in the previous quarter. In stark contrast, Samsung Electronics witnessed a remarkable surge in its market share, climbing from 21% in the first quarter to 33% in the second quarter. Micron Technology, which ranked third, experienced a slight dip in its market share, dropping from 21% in the prior quarter to 18%. Counterpoint highlighted that the current HBM revenue is predominantly generated from the fifth-generation product, HBM3E. It is anticipated that shipments of the sixth-generation HBM4 will experience substantial growth in the latter half of this year.
