On August 28, propelled by a surge in global demand fueled by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, Wong Siew Hai, President of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association, revised upwards the nation’s export forecast for electrical and electronic products for the current year, projecting it to surpass 900 billion ringgit (equivalent to roughly US$223 billion). As recently as the second quarter of this year, his expectation for exports of related products hovered above 800 billion ringgit. Wong noted that in the initial seven months of 2026, Malaysia witnessed a remarkable 44% year-on-year increase in technology product exports, reaching approximately 564 billion ringgit. This accounted for nearly 48% of the country’s total exports, with semiconductors constituting close to three-quarters of this total. On Friday, he emphasized that, given the current trajectory, export volumes could well exceed 900 billion ringgit this year, as entities across the board are actively constructing AI infrastructure.
