Based on the updates shared by developer Pongsagon Vichit on social media platforms and GitHub, his independently developed micro GPU chip, TinyGPU v2.0, has successfully undergone real-machine functional testing post-tape-out. As one of the most compact GPU chips globally, TinyGPU v2.0 is capable of producing fundamental 3D graphics output at the ASIC physical layer, with a recorded peak 3D graphics rendering frame rate of 15 FPS. Benefiting from the support of the open-source hardware community Tiny Tapeout for tape-out processes, the chip incorporates roughly 240,000 transistors, adopts 8-bit depth buffering and 4-bit double buffering techniques, and leverages external QSPI RAM as video memory, facilitating real-time rasterization rendering of up to 1,000 triangles. TinyGPU v2.0 offers comprehensive support for core graphics technologies, including single dynamic directional lighting, smooth shading, backface culling, and affine texture mapping. During tests conducted on the Basys3 development board, the chip demonstrated the ability to render low-polygon models and animated, rotating colored globes at frame rates spanning from 7.5 to 15 FPS. TinyGPU v2.0 is designed to assess the graphics computing potential of micro ASIC architectures within the confines of extremely low power consumption and minimal space requirements, rather than vying with contemporary mainstream graphics cards. Presently, its performance aligns closely with that of the FPGA-simulated iteration. The subsequent iteration, TinyGPU v3.0, has already been submitted for tape-out prior to the arrival of the v2.0 chip, with intentions to incorporate programmable pixel shaders and an anticipated release by the close of 2026.
