Renesas Electronics has announced its intention to progressively shutter its Takasaki factory in Japan over the forthcoming two to three years, while simultaneously ramping up R&D investments at the same location. This strategic decision underscores the mounting pressures on the traditional semiconductor manufacturing supply chain and is poised to have repercussions for customers, employees, and a global user base reliant on analog and power chips. Renesas Electronics clarified that the persistent structural shifts within the semiconductor industry, which are putting a squeeze on 6-inch wafer production lines, have prompted the company to embark on the gradual closure of its Takasaki factory situated in Gunma Prefecture.
