On July 29, 2026, GlobalFoundries made an announcement that it had inked a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce. According to this agreement, the company is set to receive a substantial subsidy of $300 million from the designated funding pool. This financial injection will be earmarked for accelerating the research and development of pivotal technologies, notably silicon photonics and co-packaged optics (CPO). These technologies are crucial for bolstering AI and high-performance computing data centers. As part of the deal, the U.S. government will secure roughly a 1% equity stake in GlobalFoundries.
