Taiwan is moving forward with a revision to the Energy Management Act, which suggests that large-scale commercial power users should construct their own power generation and energy storage systems. This proposal is set to impact more than 400 businesses with power demands surpassing 5MW, spanning sectors like semiconductors and data centers. The proposed amendment is scheduled to be presented to the legislature for deliberation on July 22, with the goal of boosting the energy self-reliance of these industries and lessening their dependence on the main power grid. The new legislation will include a transitional period, after which non-compliance will result in penalties, although schools and hospitals will be excluded from these requirements. Heavy power users such as TSMC could see substantial shifts in their operational expenses as a result.
