On July 19, Samsung Electronics America (SEA) implemented workforce reductions within its consumer electronics divisions, including display and mobile phone sectors, primarily impacting staff in New Jersey and Texas. The move comes as SEA prepares to relocate its headquarters to Texas, affecting a total of 739 roles in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. SEA oversees all consumer electronics operations except for the chip division. The company clarified that while most affected employees have been offered transfer opportunities, some positions have been eliminated, though no additional specifics were provided. According to a self-identified former employee, around 100 staff members at SEA’s Plano, Texas office were let go, including personnel from the mobile phone division. Although the layoffs are tied to the headquarters relocation, they also underscore the contrasting fortunes of Samsung’s business units: the chip division is posting record profits, while the consumer electronics division faces challenges due to escalating chip costs.
