On July 15th, reports emerged that the Indian Minister of Electronics and Information Technology had declared on Wednesday that India is set to inject an extra 1.28 trillion rupees (roughly equivalent to $13.3 billion) to fuel the growth of its indigenous chip manufacturing sector and inch closer to its ambition of transforming into a worldwide chip manufacturing epicenter. This initiative follows on the heels of India's 2021 launch of a $10 billion incentive scheme, which committed to shouldering half of the construction expenses for semiconductor ventures. This scheme has already provided a significant boost to India's chip industry, luring companies like U.S. memory chip giant Micron Technology and the conglomerate Tata Group to establish facilities in the western state of Gujarat. Presently, Indian Prime Minister Modi is vigorously fortifying the chip industry's framework. Despite the plan being in its nascent stages, with merely a handful of large-scale projects in motion, India is optimistic about harnessing its pool of engineering and design expertise, coupled with subsidy measures, to entice more prominent chip manufacturers to set up shop within its borders.
