Based on the most recent report from Bank of America, SK Hynix, the South Korean memory chip behemoth, has run into substantial hurdles in its efforts to expand production capacity. Projections indicate that by 2028, its actual new memory production capacity may reach only one-sixth of the initially planned figure. This revelation defies market expectations, which had anticipated an imminent and significant increase in memory supply.

The report highlights that, owing to a combination of factors—such as the shutdown of aging factories, technological advancements, and the miniaturization of manufacturing processes—the actual annual growth in operational memory wafer capacity in South Korea remains below 10%. This figure falls well short of the government's ambitious goal to double production capacity. Consequently, SK Hynix's capacity expansion initiatives have been significantly hampered, making it challenging to attain the projected capacity growth.
