According to a July 6 Bloomberg report, Samsung labor union leader Choi Seung-ho successfully negotiated substantial bonus payouts from chip division profits this May, with certain semiconductor employees slated to receive windfalls nearing $400,000. This move, however, has sparked outrage among staff in less profitable business units, some of whom received bonuses amounting to just 1% of their counterparts in the memory chip division. Expressing regret over the internal strife, Choi underwent a confidence vote to maintain his leadership role. Nevertheless, the union now faces severe divisions, with membership plummeting to below 55,000. Choi has outlined plans to bridge the bonus disparity but acknowledges that the interests of semiconductor workers and those in other divisions have diverged so significantly that they may necessitate separate union representation. Samsung is projected to rank among the world's most profitable companies this year, largely buoyed by its semiconductor division, which witnessed a staggering 48-fold surge in first-quarter profits.
