On June 24, Kim Yong-beom, the Director of the Policy Office at the South Korean Presidential Office, announced that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are in the final stages of discussions regarding their plans to establish a cutting-edge semiconductor cluster. These plans are expected to be officially unveiled once all details are finalized. Kim Yong-beom highlighted that, in response to the “explosive growth” in chip demand within the AI sector, the construction of the existing Yongin semiconductor cluster, a project jointly undertaken by the two companies, will be significantly expedited. Specifically, SK Hynix has outlined plans to construct four wafer fabrication facilities in Yongin and is currently considering bringing forward the completion date of its fourth plant from the initially projected 2044 to 2034.
