Chip behemoth Intel has entered into a partnership with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) to collaboratively drive forward the research and development of cutting-edge process technologies. Under the stewardship of CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel is vigorously bolstering its footprint in the foundry industry, with the explicit goal of going head-to-head with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). UMC, Taiwan's second-largest chipmaker, boasts a market share that is second only to TSMC's. In 2026, UMC declared a price increase for wafer foundry services in the latter half of the year and affirmed that its 12nm process platform, co-developed with Intel, is advancing seamlessly, with volume production slated for 2027. Moreover, the two companies are set to join forces on the 3nm process node as well.
