AI image generation firm Midjourney has unveiled its entry into the healthcare arena, introducing its inaugural hardware offering—the Midjourney Scanner. This innovative whole-body scanner leverages ultrasound technology. It employs a distinctive ultrasonic ring sensor and incorporates 40 ultrasound chip imaging modules sourced from Butterfly Network. This setup empowers it to produce sub-millimeter-accurate 3D body images in roughly 60 seconds. Such rapidity is nearly a hundredfold quicker than conventional MRI scans, and it operates without any radiation exposure. To use it, individuals must stand on a designated platform and submerge themselves in water. The system then emits ultrasonic waves, captures the resulting echo signals, and swiftly reconstructs images utilizing 2 PFLOPS of computational prowess. Presently, the scanner mainly generates body composition maps to aid in health management and fitness planning. For its application in medical diagnosis, FDA approval will be necessary in the future. Midjourney has ambitions to establish a Supporting Physical Examination (referred to as matched health check-up henceforth) water spa facility in San Francisco by the close of 2027, outfitting it with approximately 10 scanners, and subsequently expand its presence worldwide. The overarching objective is to have more than 50,000 scanners in operation by 2031.
