This chip, a collaborative development effort between NASA and Microchip Technology Inc., is designed to significantly boost the autonomous operation capabilities of spacecraft on deep-space missions. It showcases an impressive 100-fold increase in computational power compared to existing space computers, and its performance surpasses that of current radiation-resistant chips by 500 times. Moreover, it maintains stable operation even in the harshest of space environments. The testing regimen encompasses radiation, thermal shock, and mechanical shock evaluations, with early results proving highly promising. This innovative chip is anticipated to empower autonomous spacecraft to respond instantaneously to unforeseen circumstances and holds potential for utilization in forthcoming manned missions to the Moon and Mars.
